Lord-Priest Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf
Lord-Priest Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf - Chelaxian Bishop of Iomedae
A supreme zealot of Iomedae (pronounced ahy-OH-meh-day). Vigo stands for the goddess of righteous valor, justice, and honor. Iomedae served as Aroden’s herald, she inherited many of the Last Azlanti’s followers upon his death, and continues to espouse the ideas of honor and righteousness in the defense of good and the battle against evil. Lord Deutschendorf sternly keeps these values and closely watches his friend the Duke to advise him to do the same.
As a representative of The Church of Iomedae Vigo is ever-assertive and vigilant in rooting out evil. He was, and many of his followers are, actively involved in the Mendevian Crusades. During this time he met the Duke and recognizing his unfailing dedication to righteousness, joined his entourage.
Iomedae’s priests are composed of clerics and paladins. Personal cleanliness as well as an honorable demeanor are both very important for her followers. An hour of prayer a day is practiced, in addition to a weekly public worship service. Vigo takes this as his sacred duty and is ever mindful of his appearance and the preservation of his honor. This mitigates to some degree, his stern and vengeful temper.
He is almost never without his battle-bound copy of the Chelaxian version of the Acts of Iomedae, the Holy Book of her worship. And he consults it often for guidance. The Acts of Iomedae were eleven miracles performed by the goddess Iomedae throughout Avistan and Garund as a demonstration of Aroden’s might. Recounted in the holy text of her faith (called The Acts of Iomedae, or simply The Acts among her faithful) each of the then-mortal goddess’s legendary episodes of heroism provides an example of Iomedaean virtues. The details of the stories vary between regions, though all have the same general themes. Iomedae herself acknowledges that the lessons themselves are important, not the particulars.
Vigo is nominally recognized as a Bishop by The Seventh Church in Absalom. The Seventh Church is an important temple of Iomedae in the Ascendant Court district, and the site of the seventh of Iomedae’s 11 miraculous acts, the calling of the Undenying Light. This miracle is commemorated by the temple itself and the Iomedaenne, a 10-foot statue of limestone and sapphire. Although the goddess is popular in the city, and the Seventh Church trains most of her clerics here for three or four years, most of the priests at the church are young or elderly, since her most vital followers take up service elsewhere. Absalom is seen as a place of recruitment by the goddess’s church, rather than a bulwark of faith in peril. The high priest of the temple is the aged Genedair the Faithful, a personal friend of Vigo. When Not in the compound of House Ravenlocke, he can often be found Across the main street from the church is the Tempering Hall, which trains Paladins of Iomedae as well as Abadar, Irori, and Shelyn.
A war priest of Iomedae, Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf was born in Cheliax and raised in a devout family who refused to kneel before Asmodeus’ rule. A crime for which they were eventually dishonored, tortured and executed. Through the arrangements of his father’s loyal retainer he was spirited away to Mendev, a nation extremely favorable to Iomedae where he was raised to strictly revere the faith which had cost his family everything, a charge he took upon himself with all of his heart. Dreaming of one day righting the injustices and dishonor heaped upon his family’s name, he trained fervently and with exemplary vigor and zeal. He excelled in the wielding of Iomedae’s blessing in the form of divine spellcasting as well as in the arduous physical training of her War-Priests. In the Third Mendevian Crusades he proved his valor and zeal, bringin his unshakeable devotion to the battlefields against the fiends and horrors of the worldwound with a determination unmatched by any but the Duke and his men of Andoran. When finally he became of age enough to take position of command he was convinced by the Duke to carry on his service to Iomedae in the influential city of Absalom, where his reputation and words could fuel a new generation of crusaders to take the calling and join the Mendevian fight against ultimate evil. This he agreed to but also because the Duke brought the fight to his hated enemies, the House fo Vorstagg of Cheliax. Those partly responsible for the destruction of his family.
Position and Relevance Lord-Priest Deutschendorf is the Spiritual Advisor for House Ravenlocke. The religious authority for the House, also overseeing any divine-related goings-on within the immediate manor and Ravenlocke diaspora.
